Attorney General Steve Marshall Announces Arrest of Auburn Man for Multiple Sex Offenses Against Children
(MONTGOMERY) – Attorney General Steve Marshall announced the arrest of an Auburn man today for multiple sex offenses against children in Lee County.
David “Chip” Barkley Johnson, 60, was arrested and will be taken to the Lee County Jail, with bond set at $1.2 million. His arrest was the result of cooperation between the Alabama Attorney General’s Office and the Auburn Police Department.
Attorney General Marshall’s Criminal Trials Division presented evidence to a Lee County grand jury on April 18, 2022, resulting in an indictment* returned against Johnson for child-related sexual offenses.
Specifically, the indictment charges Johnson with 15 counts of production of obscene matter, 15 counts of possession of obscene matter, four counts of sexual abuse in the first degree, and two counts of enticing a child for immoral purposes.
No further information about the investigation of Johnson’s alleged crimes other than that stated in the indictment may be released at this time.
If convicted of the charges of production of obscene matter, Johnson faces a penalty of 10 to 99 years or life imprisonment, and a fine of up to $60,000. If convicted of any of the remaining charges, Johnson faces a penalty of one year and one day to 10 years imprisonment, and a fine of up to $15,000.
*An indictment is merely an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
