AG STRANGE REVIEWS COMPLAINTS OF VIOLATIONS OF ALABAMA GUN
LAWS IN CITIES OF MOULTON, MADISON, MOUNTAIN BROOK, HOOVER
(MONTGOMERY) – Attorney General Luther Strange today released public statements
about formal complaints received by his office concerning possible unlawful
prohibitions of firearms by the cities of Moulton, Madison, Mountain Brook and
Hoover. After reviewing and investigating each complaint, where appropriate, the
Attorney General’s Office worked with the public entity to achieve compliance with
state law.
The results of the Attorney General’s investigations are summarized below, along with
links to his determinations.

City of Moulton
The Attorney General’s Office reviewed a complaint that the City of Moulton failed to
comply with Alabama law because it prohibited firearms at the Moulton Recreational
Facility/Community Safe Shelter. After the Attorney General communicated with the
City, the signs prohibiting firearms were removed. Because the signs are removed, the
Attorney General has determined that no further action is required.

City of Madison
The Attorney General’s Office reviewed a complaint that the City of Madison failed to
comply with Alabama law because it prohibited firearms at the Bradford Creek
Greenway. After the Attorney General communicated with the City, the signs
prohibiting firearms were removed. Because the signs are removed, the Attorney
General has determined that no further action is required.

City of Mountain Brook
The Attorney General’s Office reviewed a complaint that the City of Mountain Brook
failed to comply with Alabama law because it prohibited firearms at city-owned parks.
After the Attorney General communicated with the City, the signs prohibiting firearms
were removed. Because the signs are removed, the Attorney General has determined
that no further action is required.

City of Hoover
The Attorney General’s Office received a complaint that the City of Hoover failed to
comply with Alabama law because it prohibited firearms at the Moss Rock Preserve,
Hoover Park and Recreational Facility, Hoover Public Library and Hoover Municipal
Center. After the Attorney General’s Office communicated with the City, the signs
prohibiting firearms were removed from the Moss Rock Preserve and the Hoover
Public Library. Because the signs are removed, the Attorney General has determined
that no further action is required. The City confirmed that the signs prohibiting
weapons remain at the Hoover Park and Recreational Facility because there are physical
barriers, guards, and controlled access to the facility, and state law allows prohibition of
firearms under such circumstances. The signs may also remain at the Hoover Municipal
Center because of the presence of a police station “inside the building.” Because the
City of Hoover has authority under Alabama Code ß 13A-11-61.2 to prohibit weapons
in these buildings, the Attorney General has determined that no further action is
required.
