AG STRANGE REVIEWS COMPLAINTS OF VIOLATIONS OF
ALABAMA GUN LAWS BY BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT AUTHORITY,
CITY OF BIRMINGHAM, DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES
(MONTGOMERY) – Attorney General Luther Strange today released public statements about
formal complaints received by his office concerning possible unlawful prohibitions of firearms
by the Birmingham Airport Authority, the City of Birmingham and the Alabama Department of
Human Resources. After reviewing and investigating each complaint, the Attorney General’s
Office worked with the public entity to achieve compliance with state law.
The results of the Attorney General’s investigations are summarized below, along with links to
his determinations.
Birmingham Airport Authority
The Attorney General’s Office reviewed a complaint that the Birmingham Airport Authority
failed to comply with Alabama law because it prohibited firearms in the taxi driver break room
at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. After the Attorney General communicated
with the Birmingham Airport Authority, it was determined that the Birmingham Airport
Authority meets the requirements under state law to prohibit the possession of firearms in the
taxi driver break room. The airport’s “no guns” provision is part of the rules and regulations
voluntarily agreed to by taxi companies and is not in violation of the state firearms law. The
Attorney General has determined that no further action is required.

City of Birmingham
The Attorney General’s Office reviewed a complaint that the City of Birmingham failed to
comply with Alabama law because it prohibited firearms at Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve.
After the Attorney General communicated with the City of Birmingham, the signs prohibiting
firearms were removed. Language prohibiting firearms on the Ruffner Mountain website was
also removed. Because the signs and language on the website are removed, the Attorney
General has determined that no further action is required.

Alabama Department of Human Resources

The Attorney General’s Office reviewed a complaint that the Alabama Department of Human
Resources (DHR) failed to comply with Alabama law because it prohibited firearms at its
Blount County location, as well as other locations around the state. After the Attorney General’s
Office communicated with DHR, it was determined that DHR meets the requirements under
state law to prohibit the possession of firearms because it screens visitors and has “restrictive
access to the buildings through the use of key cards, pad codes, etc.” The Attorney General has
determined that no further action is required.
