AG STRANGE PARTNERS WITH U-HAUL, UAB TO PRESENT
“ARRIVE ALIVE: STOP THE TEXTS, STOP THE WRECKS!”
PROGRAM
(MONTGOMERY) – Today, Attorney General Luther Strange joined with U-Haul
and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) to present the “Arrive Alive: Stop the
Texts, Stop the Wrecks!” program to raise awareness of the dangers of texting and driving
in Alabama.
“I am proud to partner with U-Haul and the University of Alabama at Birmingham
to spread this message of safety to the people of Alabama,” Attorney General Strange said.
“It is important that people obey the law and make good choices when it comes to keeping
themselves, their families, and everyone on the road in Alabama safe.”
The event began with a press conference highlighting the partnership between U-
Haul, UAB, and Attorney General Strange’s Office. The “Arrive Alive: Stop the Texts, Stop
the Wrecks!” event, hosted at the UAB Campus Recreation Facility, featured the “Save-A-
Life Tour, Distracted-Driving Program” which showcased high-intensity videos, show
presenters engaging attendees, and simulators.
“We hope members of the community embraced this free event to help educate and
remind all drivers, young and old, about the dangers we place ourselves in daily by driving
distracted, without even thinking about it,” stated Stuart Shoen, executive vice president of
U-Haul International, Inc.
“Everyone thinks that they are great multitaskers,” said Dr. Despina Stavrinos, UAB
Department of Psychology Assistant Professor and Translational Research for Injury
Prevention Laboratory Director. “However, statistically this cannot be true when you
consider that over half a million people are injured due to distracted driving related
incidents, with several thousand dying due to these incidents each year. Educational efforts
such as this event are important for debunking faulty perceptions about using electronic
devices behind the wheel.”
The Attorney General’s Office, UAB, and U-Haul also will be launching a state-wide
campaign featuring “Arrive Alive: Stop the Texts, Stop the Wrecks!” posters to be located in
all Alabama U-Haul locations to remind people to not text and drive.
