AG OFFICE ANNOUNCES COURT OF CRIMINAL APPEALS
UPHOLDS BIBB COUNTY CAPITAL MURDER CONVICTION

(MONTGOMERY) – Acting Attorney General Alice Martin announced that the
Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals on February 3 upheld the capital murder and
reckless endangerment convictions of Nicholas Robert Dunlap. Dunlap, 26, of
Centreville, was convicted in October of 2015 for the murder of Jason Hutchinson, and
was also convicted of shooting a firearm in the direction of Jeaniene West.
Evidence was presented at trial that on September 22, 2013, Dunlap shot a
firearm into Hutchison’s vehicle, killing him. West was a passenger in Hutchison’s car.
The shooting was the culmination of an earlier personal dispute.
The case was prosecuted at trial by Bibb County District Attorney Michael
Jackson’s office. Dunlap was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of
parole for his capital murder conviction, and to 12 months’ incarceration for his
reckless-endangerment conviction. He subsequently sought to have his convictions
reversed on appeal.

The Attorney General’s Criminal Appeals Section handled the case during the
appeals process, arguing for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to affirm the
convictions. The Court did so in a decision issued on Friday, February 3.
Acting Attorney General Martin commended Assistant Attorney General
Stephen Dodd of the Attorney General’s Criminal Appeals Section for his successful
work in this case.
