ATTORNEY GENERAL STEVEN T. MARSHALL PRAISES ALABAMA LEGISLATURE’S
PASSAGE OF KEY LAW ENFORCEMENT BILLS
(MONTGOMERY) – Attorney General Steven T. Marshall praised the Alabama Senate and
House Wednesday for their recent passage of two key law enforcement bills backed by the
Alabama Attorney General’s Office during the current legislative session.
“I applaud the work of the Alabama Senate and House in quickly passing two major bills
supported by my office to help curb costly Medicaid fraud and toughen Alabama’s extradition
law,” said Attorney General Marshall.
“The passage of SB 85 finally provides State investigators with the ability to combat Medicaid
fraud committed by a corporation or partnership. Previously, Alabama could only charge
individuals with Medicaid fraud. This new legislation also clarifies that Medicaid fraud is a
Class C felony and extends the statute of limitations to six years, bringing it in line with a
majority of states. I want to thank Senator Trip Pittman for sponsoring this legislation and for
the Legislature’s swift approval.
“With the passage of SB 61, lawmakers have also approved toughening Alabama’s extradition
law to facilitate the extradition of ‘non-fugitive’ persons who commit acts in Alabama which
result in crimes in other states, such as identity theft and fraudulent use of a credit card,”
Attorney General Marshall added. “This legislation puts Alabama on par with most other
states in pursuing charges against out-of-state criminals. I wish to thank Senator Phil Williams
and Senator Roger Smitherman for sponsoring this bill in the Senate and Rep. Allen Treadaway
for spearheading its passage in the House.”
SB 85 passed the Alabama Senate on February 14, by a vote of 25-2 before also passing the
Alabama House on March 7, by a vote of 93-0.
SB 61 passed the Alabama Senate on February 14, by a vote of 27-0 and was approved by the
Alabama House on March 7, by a vote of 97-0.
The legislation now heads to the Governor for his signature.
