AG MARSHALL ANNOUNCES COURT OF CRIMINAL APPEALS
UPHOLDS MORGAN COUNTY MURDER CONVICTION
(MONTGOMERY) – Attorney General Steven T. Marshall announced that the
Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals on Friday upheld the murder conviction and
domestic violence by strangulation conviction of Don Evan Robinson. Robinson, 40, of
Falkville, was convicted in May of 2016 for the murder of Stacey Jones.
The evidence at trial showed that the victim Jones, an accomplished technician
employed by a NASA contractor to work with the International Space Station, had a
close relationship with her family and friends. After she began a relationship with
Robinson, he engaged in numerous acts of domestic violence towards her and refused
to move out of her home. These acts of violence culminated on or about June 13, 2014,
when Robinson brutally killed Jones inside her home. At Robinson’s sentencing the
trial judge described Jones’s death as the “most despicable act [he] had ever seen.”
The case was prosecuted at trial by Morgan County District Attorney Scott
Anderson’s office. Robinson was sentenced to life imprisonment for his murder
conviction and 20 years imprisonment for his domestic violence by strangulation
conviction. He subsequently sought to have his convictions reversed on appeal.
The Attorney General’s Criminal Appeals Section handled the case during the
appeals process, arguing for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to affirm the
conviction. The Court did so in a decision issued on Friday, April 21.
Attorney General Marshall commended Assistant Attorney General Marc
Starrett of the Attorney General’s Criminal Appeals Section for his successful work in
this case.
