AG STRANGE ANNOUNCES ARRESTS OF TWO NURSES FOR
THEFT OF CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES FROM NURSING HOME
(MONTGOMERY)–Attorney General Luther Strange today announced the
arrests of two nurses formerly employed by a Marion County nursing home for the
theft of controlled substances from the facility.
Amelia Hamrick, 57, of Winfield, and Genevieve Jones, 50, of Hamilton, are
charged with second-degree theft of controlled substances from the Sunset Manor
Nursing Home in Guin, where they had been employed as licensed practical nurses.
Both women surrendered yesterday at the Marion County Jail, with bond set at
$10,000 each.
The Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit presented evidence to a
Marion County grand jury on October 17, resulting in a one-count indictment*
against each defendant.
The case was investigated by the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control
Unit after management at the nursing home discovered and reported the theft, and
is being prosecuted by the Unit’s director, Assistant Attorney General Bruce
Lieberman.
If convicted, each defendant faces up to ten years imprisonment for the class
C felony.
No further information about the investigation or about the alleged crimes
other than that stated in the indictments may be released at this time.
*An indictment is merely an accusation. Defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
