AG STRANGE ANNOUNCES CONVICTION FOR
SEX CRIMES AGAINST FIVE-YEAR-OLD GIRL
(MONTGOMERY) – Attorney General Luther Strange announced the conviction
Wednesday of a Madison County man for multiple sex crimes committed against a 5-
year-old girl. Roland Gilbert Campos III, 35, of New Market, was found guilty by a jury
in Madison County Circuit Court. Sentencing is set for July 7.
The Attorney General’s Criminal Trials Division presented evidence at court that
included a substantial detailed interview with the victim about repeated crimes of
sexual abuse and sodomy during 2012. In addition, the girl’s babysitter testified that
the girl told her what Campos had done to her. Campos admitted during testimony
that the child was usually truthful and that he had been with her on the times in
question. The defendant had been dating the victim’s mother.
Following a three-day trial, the jury found Campos guilty of two counts of first-
degree sexual abuse of a child aged less than 12 years and two counts of first-degree
sodomy. He faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years imprisonment for the sexual
abuse convictions, which are class B felonies; and up to life imprisonment for the
sodomy convictions, which are class A felonies.
“This case is a tragedy of horrendous abuse against a defenseless young child,”
said Attorney General Strange. “It is important that he will be punished for his crimes
and he should be imprisoned so that he will no longer be a danger to this child or any
other.”
Attorney General Strange commended those involved in the prosecution of this
case, noting in particular Assistant Attorneys General Kelly Hawkins Godwin and
Andrew Arrington of his Criminal Trials Division, Victim Service Officer Doris
Hancock of his Office of Victim Assistance and Special Agents of his Investigations
Division. He also thanked the National Children’s Advocacy Center.
