AG ANNOUNCES ARREST OF FORMER NURSING HOME
BUSINESS MANAGER FOR THEFT FROM PATIENT TRUST FUND

(MONTGOMERY)–Attorney General Luther Strange announced the arrest of a
Pleasant Grove woman on charges that she stole from the patient trust fund of a
Bessemer nursing home while she was employed as the facility’s business office
manager.

Martha G. Armstrong, 59, surrendered yesterday at the Jefferson County
Detention Facility and was released on bond. The Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud
Control Unit presented evidence to the August term of the Jefferson County grand jury,
resulting in Armstrong’s indictment* for one count of theft of property in the first
degree, a class B felony.

It is alleged that Armstrong, while employed at Oaks on Parkwood Skilled
Nursing Facility, stole more than $5,000 from the accounts of eight residents that had
been entrusted to her as the facility’s business office manager. The theft was discovered
during a routine audit by the facility’s management and immediately reported to
authorities.

Attorney General Strange thanked the management of Oaks on Parkwood for
their diligence in discovering the theft, and commended his Medicaid Fraud Control
Unit for its handling of the investigation.

  • An indictment is merely an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
