AG STRANGE ANNOUNCES 20-YEAR PRISON SENTENCE
FOR RAPE IN LAMAR COUNTY
(MONTGOMERY) – Attorney General Luther Strange announced that a
Sulligent man was sentenced yesterday to serve 20 years in prison for rape.
Draper Bonman was found guilty by a jury in Lamar County Circuit Court on
October 7 of second-degree rape.
Bonman, now 38, was 34 at the time of the crime, when he had sexual
intercourse with a 15-year-old victim. Second-degree rape is a class B felony.
“I am pleased that this predator will serve 20 years in prison for his
crime,” said Attorney General Strange. “It is appropriate that this man will be
severely punished for preying upon a young girl who was a minor,” said
Attorney General Strange.
The Attorney General’s Criminal Trials Division prosecuted the case at the
request of the Lamar County District Attorney’s office, which recused from the
case. Attorney General Strange commended those involved in bringing this
matter to a successful conclusion, noting Assistant Attorney General Stephanie
Billingslea, chief of his Criminal Trials Division, Assistant Attorney General
Leigh Gwathney of the Criminal Trials Division, and Ashley Harbin of the
Attorney General’s Office of Victim Assistance. He also thanked the Sulligent
Police Department and the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office for their investigation.
