AG STRANGE REVIEWS COMPLAINTS OF VIOLATIONS
OF ALABAMA’S GUN LAW IN MARION AND DALLAS COUNTIES
(MONTGOMERY) – Attorney General Luther Strange today released a public statement
about two formal complaints received by his office concerning possible unlawful prohibitions of
firearms by the City of Hamilton in Marion County and by the Dallas County Commission. The
results of the Attorney General’s investigations follow, along with links to his determinations.
The Attorney General’s Office reviewed a complaint that the E.T. Sims, Jr.
Neighborhood Facilities Building and surrounding parks failed to comply with Alabama law
because they prohibited firearms. After the Attorney General communicated with the city
attorney, the City of Hamilton removed the signs prohibiting weapons from the building and
parks. Because the signs are removed, the Attorney General has determined that no further

The Attorney General’s Office reviewed a complaint that the Dallas County Commission
failed to comply with Alabama law because it prohibited firearms at the Selma and Dallas
County Chamber of Commerce. After the Attorney General communicated with the
Commission, the signs prohibiting weapons were removed. Because the signs are removed, the
Attorney General has determined that no further action is needed. The complainant also
objected to the fact that the signs said they were provided by the sheriff. Because these signs
have been removed and because a sheriff’s discretionary decision to provide signs to his
constituents is not an “order, ordinance, or rule” subject to a complaint under Alabama Code
Section 13A-11-61.3(f)(1), the Attorney General has determined that no further action is needed.
