AG STRANGE REVIEWS COMPLAINTS OF VIOLATIONS OF
ALABAMA GUN LAWS IN TRUSSVILLE, BESSEMER AND CLAY
(MONTGOMERY) – Attorney General Luther Strange today released public statements
about formal complaints received by his office concerning possible unlawful
prohibitions of firearms in Trussville, Bessemer and Clay. After reviewing and
investigating each complaint, the Attorney General’s Office worked with the public
entity involved to achieve compliance with state law.
The results of the Attorney General’s investigations are summarized below, along with
links to his determinations.
Trussville Civic Center
The Attorney General’s Office reviewed a complaint that the Trussville Civic Center
failed to comply with Alabama law because it prohibited firearms. After the Attorney
General communicated with the City of Trussville, the signs prohibiting firearms were
removed. Because the City of Trussville is now compliant with Alabama law, the
Attorney General has determined that no further action is required.

Bessemer Civic Center
The Attorney General’s Office reviewed a complaint that the Bessemer Civic Center
failed to comply with Alabama law because it prohibited firearms. After the Attorney
General communicated with the City of Bessemer, the signs prohibiting firearms were
removed. However, the City of Bessemer will continue to post temporary signs
prohibiting firearms from non-permit holders as permitted by state law. Because the
City of Bessemer is now compliant with Alabama law, the Attorney General has
determined that no further action is required.

City of Clay
The Attorney General’s Office reviewed a complaint that the City of Clay failed to
comply with Alabama law because it prohibited firearms at public parks and the city
library. After the Attorney General communicated with the City of Clay, the signs
prohibiting firearms were removed. Because the City of Clay is now compliant with
Alabama law, the Attorney General has determined that no further action is required.
