AG OFFICE REVIEWS COMPLAINTS OF VIOLATIONS OF ALABAMA GUN LAWS BY
STATE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR, AND LEE AND PERRY COUNTY SHERIFF OFFICES
(MONTGOMERY) – Attorney General Steven T. Marshall today released public statements
about formal complaints received by the Attorney General’s Office concerning possible
unlawful prohibitions of firearms by the Alabama Department of Labor, the Lee County
Sheriff’s Office and the Perry County Sheriff’s Office. After reviewing and investigating each
complaint, the Attorney General’s Office worked with the public entity to achieve compliance
with state law.
The results of the Attorney General’s Office investigations are summarized below, along with
links to the determinations.
Alabama Department of Labor
A petitioner alleged that the Alabama Department of Labor failed to comply with Alabama law
because it prohibited firearms at its non-rural Career Center locations around the state. After
the Attorney General communicated with the Department of Labor, the signs prohibiting
firearms were removed. Because the signs are removed, the Attorney General has determined
that no further action is required.

Lee County Sheriff’s Office
A petitioner alleged that the Lee County Sheriff’s Office failed to comply with Alabama law by
issuing pistol permits that include incorrect language. A sheriff may revoke a pistol permit for
any reason that could lead to the denial of a permit pursuant to Alabama Code Section 13A-11-
75(a)(2)(a), and wide discretion is afforded to a sheriff in determining who is and who is not
suitable for a pistol permit. The Attorney General has determined that the Sheriff of Lee County
is not promulgating or enforcing any orders, ordinances, or rules in violation of Alabama law
and that no further action is required.

Perry County Sheriff’s Office

A petitioner alleged that the Sheriff of Perry County prohibited citizens from openly carrying
firearms in Perry County. After the Attorney General communicated with the Sheriff of Perry
County, it was determined that the Sheriff does not require citizens to have pistol permits in
order to openly carry firearms in Perry County. The Attorney General has determined that no
further action is required.
