AG MARSHALL REVIEWS COMPLAINTS OF VIOLATIONS OF ALABAMA
GUN LAWS IN MOBILE, HOOVER, MONTGOMERY AND SOUTHSIDE
(MONTGOMERY) – Attorney General Steve Marshall today released public statements
about formal complaints received by his office concerning possible unlawful
prohibitions of firearms by the cities of Mobile, Hoover and Montgomery, and the town
of Southside. After reviewing and investigating each complaint, where appropriate, the
Attorney General’s Office worked with the public entity to achieve compliance with
state law.
The results of the Attorney General’s investigations are summarized below, along with
links to his determinations.
City of Mobile
The Attorney General’s Office reviewed a complaint that the City of Mobile failed to
comply with Alabama law because it prohibited firearms at the Connie Hudson Mobile
Regional Senior Community Center. After the Attorney General communicated with
the City, the City promised to remove the signs prohibiting firearms. Because the City
will be compliant with Alabama law, the Attorney General has determined that no
further action is required.

City of Hoover
The Attorney General’s Office received a complaint that the City of Hoover failed to
comply with Alabama law because it prohibited weapons at the Hoover Public Library.
After the Attorney General’s Office communicated with the City, it was determined that
the City meets the requirements of state law to prohibit the possession of firearms at the
Hoover Public Library due to its limited and secured access. The Attorney General has
determined that no further action is required.

City of Montgomery
The Attorney General’s Office received a complaint that the City of Montgomery
intended to sponsor a gun buyback program in violation of Alabama law. An
investigation by the Attorney General’s Office determined that the City is not
sponsoring a gun buyback program and is not offering remuneration to another party
for the surrender or transfer of privately owned firearms. Because the City is compliant
with Alabama law, the Attorney General has determined no further action is required.

The Attorney General’s Office received a complaint that the City of Montgomery failed
to comply with Alabama law because it prohibited weapons at the Montgomery Zoo. It
was determined that the Montgomery Zoo is permitted to prohibit possession of
firearms because it actively excludes unauthorized persons from entry and requires the
purchase of an admission ticket to enter. The Attorney General has determined that no
further action is required.

Town of Southside
The Attorney General’s Office received a complaint that the Town of Southside failed to
comply with Alabama law because it prohibited weapons at the Southside Softball
Complex. After the Attorney General communicated with the Town of Southside, the
Town replied that it does not enforce a prohibition on firearms at the Southside Softball
Complex, that it has purposely obscured the language regarding the prohibition on
firearms, and that it is in the process of replacing the sign to omit the language
regarding a prohibition on firearms. The Attorney General has determined that no
further action is required.
