AG MARSHALL REVIEWS COMPLAINTS OF VIOLATIONS OF ALABAMA
GUN LAWS BY WEST MORGAN-EAST LAWRENCE WATER AND SEWER
AUTHORITY, AND CITIES OF HUNTSVILLE AND OPELIKA
(MONTGOMERY) – Attorney General Steve Marshall today released public statements
about formal complaints received by his office concerning possible unlawful
prohibitions of firearms by the West Morgan-East Lawrence Water and Sewer
Authority and the cities of Huntsville and Opelika. After reviewing and investigating
each complaint, where appropriate, the Attorney General’s Office worked with the
public entity to achieve compliance with state law.
The results of the Attorney General’s investigations are summarized below, along with
links to his determinations.
West Lawrence-East Morgan Sewer and Water Authority
The Attorney General’s Office reviewed a complaint that the West Lawrence-East
Morgan Water and Sewer Authority failed to comply with Alabama law because it
prohibited firearms on its premises, as opposed to inside the building. After the
Attorney General communicated with the Authority, the Authority amended its sign to
prohibit firearms in its building. Because the City is compliant with Alabama law, the
Attorney General has determined that no further action is required.

City of Huntsville
The Attorney General’s Office received a complaint that the City of Huntsville failed to
comply with Alabama law because it prohibited weapons on the premises of the
Davidson Center for the Arts, as opposed to inside the building. After the Attorney
General’s Office communicated with the City, the City replied that, despite the
language on its signs, it only intends to prohibit firearms inside the building for the
Davidson Center for the Arts, not its premises. Because the City of Huntsville is
compliant with Alabama law, the Attorney General has determined that no further
action is required.

The Attorney General’s Office received a complaint that the City of Huntsville failed to
comply with Alabama law because it prohibited weapons on the premises of the Von
Braun Center, as opposed to inside the building. After the Attorney General’s Office
communicated with the City, the City replied that, despite the language on its signs, it
only intends to prohibit firearms inside the building for the Von Braun Center, not its
premises. Because the City of Huntsville is compliant with Alabama law, the Attorney
General has determined that no further action is required.

City of Opelika
The Attorney General’s Office received a complaint that the City of Opelika failed to
comply with Alabama law because it prohibited firearms at the Lewis Cooper Jr.
Memorial Library. After the Attorney General investigated, it was determined that
signs prohibiting firearms are no longer posted at the Library. Because the City is
compliant with Alabama law, the Attorney General has determined no further action is
required.
