AG MARSHALL ANNOUNCES MURDER CONVICTIONS
OF CEDRIC ORLANDO YOUNG IN ETOWAH COUNTY
(MONTGOMERY) – Attorney General Steve Marshall announced the convictions
today of Cedric Orlando Young for the murders of Jabari Player and Billy Baker. Young
pleaded guilty in Etowah County Circuit Court to two counts of murder and was
sentenced to life in prison for each count. The life sentences were imposed
consecutively.
Young shot and killed Jabari Player and Billy Baker in Etowah County on August
7, 2013 on the West Meighan Bridge in Gadsden. Evidence showed that Young was
traveling in a vehicle and fired into another vehicle occupied by the victims, killing both
Player and Baker.
The Attorney General’s Criminal Trials Division accepted the case for
prosecution earlier this year. The Attorney General’s Office handled the case at the
request of the District Attorney’s Office, which recused due to a conflict.
“I am pleased that we have been able to deliver a measure of justice for the
victims’ families,” said Attorney General Marshall. “It is appropriate that the defendant
will serve the rest of his life in prison for the murders he committed.”
Attorney General Marshall commended those involved in bringing this trial to a
successful conclusion, noting in particular Assistant Attorneys General Brittney Bucak
and Chris Moore of the Attorney General’s Criminal Trials Division, and Sarah Green,
director of the Attorney General’s Office of Victim Assistance. He also thanked the
Gadsden Police Department.
