ATTORNEY GENERAL STEVE MARSHALL ANNOUNCES COURT OF CRIMINAL
APPEALS UPHOLDS BLOUNT COUNTY FELONY MURDER CONVICTIONS
(MONTGOMERY) – Attorney General Steve Marshall announced the Alabama
Court of Criminal Appeals has upheld the felony murder convictions of Paul Mason
Trull. Trull, 20, of Pinson, was convicted in Blount County Circuit Court in March of
2017 for the felony murders of Gary Hazelrig and Breann Sherrer.
Evidence was presented at trial about the crimes committed in the early morning
hours of September 14, 2015. Trull and two other men, Lane Bosner and Cody Dooley,
drove to Hazelrig’s residence and robbed the house of guns, cellular telephones, cash,
drugs, household items, and a four-wheeler. In the process of the robbery, Hazelrig and
Sherrer were shot and killed.
The case was prosecuted at trial by Blount County District Attorney Pamela
Casey. Trull was sentenced to 75 years imprisonment for each conviction and he
subsequently sought to have his convictions reversed on appeal.
Dooley entered guilty pleas to two counts of intentional murder, testified against
Bosner and Trull, and received two concurrent 50-year sentences. Bosner was convicted
by a jury of the capital murders of Hazelrig and Sherrer, and received two sentences of
life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
The Attorney General’s Criminal Appeals Section handled Trull’s case during the
appeals process, arguing for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to affirm the
convictions. The Court did so in a decision issued Friday, February 2.
Attorney General Marshall commended Assistant Attorney General Stephen
Dodd of the Attorney General’s Criminal Appeals Section for his successful work in this
case.
