AG MARSHALL ANNOUNCES CONVICTION OF CONTRACTOR FOR FORGERY
FILED WITH ALABAMA LICENSURE BOARD FOR GENERAL CONTRACTORS
(MONTGOMERY)–Attorney General Steve Marshall announced the conviction
of a contractor for forgery of paperwork related to the renewal of his license with the
Alabama Licensure Board for General Contractors. Morris Mitchell, 52, of Grayson,
Georgia, pleaded guilty yesterday in Montgomery County Circuit Court to second-
degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.
Mitchell operated Dreamway Construction, LLC, in Hardaway, Alabama, in
Macon County. He admitted to submitting a forged certificate of liability insurance to
the Board. Documentation of liability insurance is required by the Board for a contractor
to obtain or renew a license.
“State licensing boards protect the public by ensuring that applicants meet
minimum standards,” said Attorney General Marshall. “When a building contractor
submits false documents in order to obtain a license, the public is put at risk. This is one
of many cases where my Special Prosecutions Division has enforced the law to maintain
the integrity of State agencies tasked with protecting the public. Offenders should
expect to be prosecuted.”
Sentencing is set for April 26. Mitchell faces a penalty of one year and one day to
10 years imprisonment and a fine of up to $15,000 for the Class C felony.
Attorney General Marshall thanked the Alabama Licensure Board for General
Contractors for its vigilance in discovering the matter and referring it to the Attorney
General’s Office for investigation and prosecution. He commended Assistant Attorney
General Megan Kirkpatrick and Special Agents of his Special Prosecutions Division for
bringing this case to a successful conclusion.
