Attorney General Steve Marshall Announces Conviction and Jail
Sentence for Former Department of Transportation Employee
(MONTGOMERY) – Attorney General Steve Marshall announced the conviction and
sentencing of a former Department of Transportation employee for theft of more than
$20,000 in metal intended for use on state roads.
Christopher Lee Hobbs pleaded guilty on December 18 in Montgomery County Circuit
Court to first-degree theft of property, was sentenced to three years, which was
suspended for time served and three years of probation. Additionally, he was ordered
to pay restitution in the amount of $20,050.
Hobbs, 50, of Wetumpka, was a transportation maintenance technician with the
Department of Transportation. In his guilty plea, Hobbs admitted that he unlawfully
took metal intended for use on Alabama’s public roads and highways and sold that
metal as scrap to various recycling centers in the Montgomery area.
“This man betrayed the public trust and stole more than $20,000 from the taxpayers,”
said Attorney General Marshall. “I am pleased that he has been held to account and is
being punished for his crime, and that we are recovering this money for the citizens of
Alabama.”
Attorney General Marshall commended the special agents and attorneys of his Special
Prosecutions Division and thanked the Alabama Department of Transportation for its
assistance in the successful prosecution of this matter.
