Attorney General Steve Marshall Announces Court of Criminal
Appeals Upholds Mobile County Murder Conviction

(MONTGOMERY) – Attorney General Steve Marshall announced that on Friday the
Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed the murder conviction of Frederick
Matthews. Matthews, 32, of Mobile, was convicted in Mobile County Circuit Court in
March 2018 for the murder of Ahmon Sims.
The evidence at trial showed that on July 12, 2015, Sims and Matthews were arguing
about a stereo that Matthews accused Sims of stealing. Matthews obtained a gun, Sims
ran, and Matthews shot him multiple times as he was running away. Sims died from
the gunshot wounds.
Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich’s office prosecuted this case and obtained
a guilty verdict. Matthews was sentenced to life imprisonment for his conviction.
Matthews sought to have his conviction reversed on appeal.
The Attorney General’s Criminal Appeals Division handled the case during the appeals
process, arguing for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to affirm the conviction.
The Court did so in a decision issued Friday, June 21.
Attorney General Marshall commended Assistant Attorney General Yvonne Saxon for
her successful work on this case.
