Attorney General Steve Marshall Announces Conviction of Jefferson County Man on Child Pornography Possession Charges
(MONTGOMERY) – Attorney General Steve Marshall announced the conviction of a former patrol deputy with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office on multiple charges of possession of child pornography. Phillip Wayne Humphries, 59, of Trussville, pleaded guilty Monday in Jefferson County Court to 25 counts of possession of obscene matter.
Attorney General Marshall’s Criminal Trials Division presented evidence to a Jefferson County grand jury on February 23, resulting in Humphries’ indictment on 25 counts of possession of obscene matter depicting a person under the age of 17.
On November 29, Humphries was sentenced to 10 years, which was split for him to serve one year in the Jefferson County Community Corrections’ Program, followed by three years of unsupervised probation. Humphries must immediately register as a sex offender and abide by all requirements of Alabama’s Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.
“Sex crimes against children are particularly tragic because of the devastation they wreak upon the victims’ innocence and trust,” said Attorney General Marshall. “It is vital that we take these violations seriously and punish those who commit these vile crimes.”
Attorney General Steve Marshall commended his Criminal Trials Division for its successful prosecution of this case, noting in particular Assistant Attorneys General Tara Ratz and Jillian Evans, as well as the Special Victims Unit of his Investigations Division.
