The Attorney General's Office is the most diverse law firm in the state. As can be seen from the division description pages, attorneys in the office handle a wide range of legal issues, at both the trial and appellate level, as well as other types of legal work for the State. Our office periodically recruits attorneys who are willing to assist us in fulfilling our mission.
The office provides two types of legal opportunities -- Attorneys and Law Clerks. In most instances, the Chief Deputy Attorney General, Clay Crenshaw, screens and interviews applicants. Based on information collected during the interview process, employment recommendations are given to the Attorney General.
The office employs approximately 80 in-house attorneys and oversees the legal work of more than 100 attorneys across the state. The office has a number of division specialities ranging from criminal prosecution to civil constitutional defense to environmental law. All applicants must be members of the Alabama State Bar or are sitting for the bar exam.

Each year, the Attorney General’s Office takes into service approximately 30 law students for its summer clerkship program. Students selected for the program spend six weeks in the Office during either the first or second half of summer. Our clerks are assigned to one of the Office’s seven legal divisions, where they work side-by-side with division attorneys to gain experience with the unique work handled by “the State’s law firm.”
The Attorney General’s Office participates in on-campus interviews at Cumberland School of Law and the University of Alabama School of Law, and recruits from other law schools across the southeast via postings on career services management systems (such as Symplicity and 12Twenty). We also accept applications from students through our website. Previous clerk classes have included students from Cumberland, the University of Alabama, Vanderbilt, the University of Virginia, Emory, the University of Georgia, the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), and Tulane.
