(Montgomery)—Attorney General Steve Marshall announced that the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed the convictions of Eduardo Alexander Cuz-Hor, 20, of Dothan, for intentional murder and assault in the second-degree. Cuz-Hor was convicted in the Houston County Circuit Court on August 3, 2022.
The evidence at trial showed that in the early morning hours of March 1, 2021, Cuz-Hor stabbed his uncle, Mario Antonio Cuz-Caal, to death and also attacked his cousin while struggling for the knife. Cuz-Hor was later arrested by responding officers as he fled the scene of the crime. At trial Cuz-Hor claimed self-defense. The jury rejected that claim.
Houston County District Attorney Russ Goodman’s office successfully prosecuted this case and obtained guilty verdicts. Cuz-Hor was sentenced to ninety-nine years’ imprisonment for his convictions. Cuz-Hor sought to have his convictions reversed on appeal.
The Attorney General’s Criminal Appeals Division handled the case during the appeals process, arguing for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to affirm Cuz-Hor’s convictions. The Court did so in a decision issued Friday, August 11, 2023.
Attorney General Marshall commended Assistant Attorney General William D. Dill for his successful work on this case and thanks District Attorney Russ Goodman and his staff, for their valuable assistance in defending the intentional murder and assault in the second-degree convictions.
