(Montgomery)—Attorney General Steve Marshall announced that the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed the conviction of Willie Lee Addison III, 43, of Montgomery, for manslaughter. Addison was convicted in the Montgomery County Circuit Court on June 9, 2022.
On January 15, 2017, the victim, Broderick Shields, drove his vehicle down Fifth Street in Montgomery and stopped in front of a residence where he accidentally blocked both a driveway and Addison’s mailbox. Addison rushed out of his home cursing at the victim to move his van. Addison then threw a brick through the back window of the van, and picked up another brick and struck the driver through the driver’s side window. The victim died fifteen days later from a severe blow to the head. Though charged with murder, Addison was convicted by the Montgomery County jury for the offense of manslaughter.
Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey’s office successfully prosecuted this case and obtained a guilty verdict. Addison was sentenced to life in prison for his crime. Addison sought to have his conviction reversed on appeal.
The Attorney General’s Criminal Appeals Division handled the case during the appeals process, arguing for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to affirm Addison’s conviction. The Court did so in a decision issued Friday, August 11, 2023.
Attorney General Marshall commended Assistant Attorney General John J. Davis for his successful work on this case and thanks District Attorney Daryl Bailey and his staff for their valuable assistance in defending the manslaughter conviction.
