DEPUTY AG COREY MAZE IS HONORED WITH VOCAL AWARD
(MONTGOMERY)–Deputy Attorney General Corey Maze has been honored by
Alabama Victims of Crime and Leniency (VOCAL) with its 2011 Miriam Shehane Award
“for sincere dedication in the pursuit of justice, for the unwavering support and dedicated
commitment to advancing victims’ rights in the State of Alabama.”
Maze was recognized for his work with crime victims as a trial prosecutor from
2005-2009, including six capital murder trials and an attempted double murder trial; and for
his work with crime victims on dozens of criminal appeals involving oral arguments for the
past eight years.
Maze was particularly noted for his work with victims in appeals to the U.S. Court
of Appeals for the 11th Circuit and to the U.S. Supreme Court by Billy Joe Magwood, who
remains on death row now 32 years after his murder of Coffee County Sheriff Neil
Grantham in 1979. In presenting the award to Maze, VOCAL also commended Grantham’s
sister, Janette Grantham, a former victims’ services officer for the Attorney General’s Office.
Following his years of service in prosecuting criminal trials and handling appellate
cases as an Assistant Attorney General and Solicitor General, Maze was assigned by
Attorney General Luther Strange this January to handle litigation on behalf of the State of
Alabama regarding the massive 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
“I am proud of the outstanding work performed by Corey Maze on behalf of crime
victims for the State of Alabama,” said Attorney General Strange. “He has served as an
excellent prosecutor and appellate attorney, with a keen sensitivity to the victims of the
cases he is handling. As he now devotes his skill and expertise to protecting the interests
and rights of Alabama in the oil spill litigation, he continues to work on behalf of victims
who were harmed by this catastrophic event.”
Maze is a 2003 graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington,
D.C., and he joined the Attorney General’s Office that same year. He is a native of Centre,
Alabama, and a 1999 graduate of Auburn University.
Miriam Shehane, for whom this award is named, is a longtime leading advocate for
victims’ rights in Alabama. A founder of VOCAL in 1982, she continues to serve as
executive director of this organization. Mrs. Shehane became involved and dedicated to the
service of victims after she suffered tragedy herself when her 21-year-old daughter
Quenette was murdered in 1976.
